Diabetes Insipidus can sometimes
be confused with diabetes mellitus because the symptoms of both of these
diseases are an increase in urination and thirst. However, these two
types of diabetes are completely different and unrelated. They also
have completely different causes and treatments.
Diabetes mellitus is often
called sugar diabetes in order to distinguish it from the less common
diabetes insipidus, which is sometimes referred to as "water" diabetes.
A person who is constantly
thirsty and urinates more than normal certainly could be a candidate
for one of these two types of diabetes. For most people who eventually
end up being diagnosed with diabetes, this will mean being diagnosed
with 'mellitus' rather than 'insipidus' but rarely, it is the other
way around. Only your doctor can make this diagnosis.
People who are diagnosed
with diabetes insipidus will need to undergo a variety of treatments.
It is important that you follow your doctors orders exactly as they
are given and go to any follow up appointments that are needed.
